Calf to Beef programme
The Iomlán Animal Science Calf to Beef programme was designed to provide calf to beef farmers and production systems with a clear health and nutritional plan for each individual farm. We create a plan for your farm and also supply all the products for this plan. This means that best prices are achieved on products. There are several systems of calf to beef rearing e.g.
- Intensive Bull beef systems finishing under 16 months
- Under 24 months optimising grass utilisation
- Finishing off grass
- Indoor finishing
This is why Iomlán Animal Science look at every farm independently and see what the goal of the farm is and what are the most common issues that arise on the farm. We use this information and our Vets and nutritionist's devise a health and nutritional plan specifically for the farm. By doing this we improve animal health and production which ultimately reduces costs and improves farm profits. Whether it's the calf health, scour issues or the finishing of the cattle that aren't going just the way you would like, we can also look at these areas individually and advise what corrective actions are needed.
Assessing the mineral status, worm burden and vaccination are key in a calf to beef production system. Our testing database provides us with current mineral levels throughout Ireland and our experience dealing with these on farm issues allows us to target the deficiencies with best approach possible. Testing for worms provides accurate information on what species to target along with identifying resistance problems. This is important in making your enterprise as efficient as possible. Reducing antibiotic usage is also a goal of the Iomlán Calf to Beef programme by working in a preventative manner to reduce the antibiotics needed.

Mr. Michael Ryan Calf to Beef farmer
Michael Ryan from Ballymore in Co. Westmeath has been working with Iomlán Animal Science since 2017. He called Iomlán representative Shane Hunt when he saw his calves were not thriving and doing as well as he would have liked. Iomlán called to his farm and went through all the stock, tested feed, looked at wormers and the plan for the calves and designed a Calf to Beef nutritional and health programme specifically for the farm’s needs.
This included minerals & vitamins, wormers & vaccines he should use, hygiene programme for cleaning sheds, feeders etc, testing silage, designing a diet the finishing cattle at grass, indoors and also for the young calves at grass along with rumen and intestinal enhancing products which are used at critical points in the chain.
The plan was laid out on what jobs were for doing each month of the year and there was nothing left to chance. Michael immediately saw the benefits from this and it was also coming within the Teagasc budget for spending on medicinal products and minerals on calves. “I could see a response from day one” "In July my calves were growing @ 0.74kg/head/day, they started on the Iomlán products the end of July and were weighed the end of September. I knew they had thrived well and this was proved with the growth rates of 1.42Kg/head/day from July to September. They turned inside out. They have continued to do well over the winter".
Iomlán also worked with Michael on the finishing cattle and designed a ration for his heifers and bullocks to be finished off grass and also for some cattle that were finished indoors. Michael was impressed with the way the cattle finished and particularly how they graded. No cattle graded P in the group of Angus and Herefords crosses off the dairy herd and all had the right amount of cover with great fat scores. The cattle finished sooner than ever for Michael with all but 10 cattle finished in 2017 with the other 10 killed in early January. “Other years I would have a lot more cattle finished in the spring of the following year, but not with the plan Iomlán put in place”.
The finishing cattle started with Neofenol for 5 days in the meal to help the cattle adjust to the new diet and aid intestinal and ruminal health and also boost the immune system. They were then on a ration designed by Iomlán along with their powdered based for fattening and young stock. “The cattle were health with no setbacks and finished well”. We have started again this year with Iomlán with the young suck calves and will bring these through to beef on the Iomlán Calf to Beef plan”.
Michael is also a participant of the Teagasc Greenacres programme.
Dominate Liquid is a spray that is composed of a selection of probiotic bacteria. These good bacteria naturally go into battle with pathogenic bacteria. The pathogens have less chance to multiply and lowers the risk of digestive problems and skin diseases.
Glanzym is an enzymatic, strong foaming cleaner for removing persistent organic contamination and biofilm.
Neofenol is a feeding and milk (replacer) application for calves and lambs. The active substances are matrix encapsulated and ensure a healthy gut flora and increased immunity.
Neofenol Starter can be directly applied orally for weak newborn piglets, lambs and calves. It stabilizes the intestinal flora, supports immunity and provides an energy boost.
This formulation is designed specifically to support muscle growth and feeds for optimal rumen development in young ruminants. The Beef/Heifer mixture helps optimal growth, healthy calves and a good quality colostrum.
Levabon Rumen E is an autolysed yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) which is spray-dried in order to preserve the biological value of the cell wall carbohydrates, peptides, essential amino acids and vitamins B.
